Asked for an NY State Inspection on a Friday. Vehicle had gas cap fitment issue that caused the check engine light to go off, which I already knew and told the service representative. They told me later that this won't pass inspection, and they need to perform some kind of comprehensive check on the engine (or maybe I misunderstood what that is, but the representative described in very fancy terms). I asked to fix the gas cap first and then see whether additional service needs to be performed. They pushed back, telling me that their procedure is standard. They performed it the next Monday and found that (1) the gas cap is not fitted correctly, (2) the carbon canister has a leak, (3) there's a crack on one of the turn signals. At that point, cost already incurred was $21 for inspection and $122 for the performed checks. The proposed repairs would have cost around $450 for the carbon canister, $170 for the turn signal (they propose used parts, while allowing me to use new parts that have a longer lead time), and $60 for fixing the gas cap. The reader of this article could Google what these parts cost for a Jeep JK. I declined the proposed repair. And when I picked up the vehicle, I asked "did you find anything else wrong on the engine" and was told "you didn't ask us to perform an engine check." In conclusion, the one-star rating is given to the non-transparent price estimates (including their high labor cost and big parts premium) and the forceful sales person (in pushing back what the customer would like to do, without a clear and transparent explanation).NegativeValueServicesGeneral repairs & maintenance

A few months ago, my fiancée and I took our car to Mac's 2 for its inspection after reading all the good reviews here. We also asked for a quote on our hood latch release, as it was no longer able to pop the hood. They completed and passed the inspection, and gave us a quote for something like $400 for the hood release. I'm handy and that quote seemed ridiculous, so we declined the extra work and I said I'd do it myself. Less than a month after getting the car back, the front brakes started to grind. We're talking metal on metal. How is this possible? They just looked at it and should have failed it for pad depth, or at least *warned* us about it. I've attached photos to show the blatant neglect and disregard for safety (and the law). I highly doubt they looked at anything if they missed something so brazen. As for the hood latch, my lazy self finally got around to doing it. The only issue was a $11 bracket being bent. The whole mechanism didn't need to be replaced, but they wouldn't know because they didn't look at that either. Looking at all these positive reviews is perplexing. As someone who does all their own car maintenance and basic repairs, this is the most dishonest experience I've ever had with an auto shop.ServicesVehicle Inspection, Vehicle safety inspection

I have used Macs II for auto body work on a number of occasions over the years. Their services are the best of any business I've ever dealt with. Their body work is done with the most punctilious perfection. Your car comes back to you looking better than before the fender-bender that sent you to them. The advice and help from their knowledgeable staff is up to the same standard of perfection. In this regard I single out for special praise Bruce, manager of their collisions operations. They are very smart people who know their stuff and whose insight has helped me get the best possible result. Their work is prompt, their interaction with the insurance companies is seamless, their responsiveness to their customers is exemplary. So is the timeliness of their responses. If anything can take the sting out of having your car hit, it's being able to work with people like those at Macs II to get it fixed. From start to finish, and point-for-point, Macs II is the very best. I wouldn't think of taking my car anywhere else. And for the record, I have no relationship with Macs II, its staff or owners other than that of a very happy and satisfied customer.PositivePunctuality, Quality, Professionalism, ValueServicesBody & Trim, Painting

I have used Mac II for all my car work for more that 35 years. The reasons I go there are many. They do the job right and on the rare occasions when it isn't right, they fix it immediately. They are trustworthy and never try to push a repair that isn't necessary. They may be a bit expensive, but in the long term it pays off in reliability, convenience, and avoidance of bad repairs. In short they do what they say they will do and when they said it will be done. And they will drive you and pick you up anywhere you need to go. Yesterday I was reminded of all this. I was coming into Rochester for the day for some appointments and heard a ratting sound from my car. This was a problem for me because I needed to return to the North Country in the afternoon and couldn't be stranded somewhere on I-81. I called Macs and asked (Walter) if they could take a look at my car. Despite the fact they they were fully booked, they made time, fixed the broken exhaust bracket, and refused to accept any payment. This is why I go back, even while living out of town. This is the way a business should be run.ServicesGeneral repairs & maintenance

Went in to get brakes checked out. Asked for an estimate to replace brake pads. Was told by the gentlemen at front desk you HAVE TO replace all rotors and pads because its "the only way to do it" which is a flat out lie. Anyone who has basic knowledge of how brakes work in an automobile can confirm this. This is all before they even inspected them! Brake pads and rotors are two separate parts and do not wear at the same rate. He then proceeded to tell me it would cost $850!! Went to a qualified mechanic who found the rear pads were worn, one rear rotor was bad, but the others were all in great shape including the front brake pads. Bought my own platinum pads from advance auto parts for $53 with 18% discount and paid $127 for a new rotor and labor to replace the rear pads. Front pads are hardly worn at all. Brakes are working great. Be sure to get a second opinion if you get a quote that doesn't sound right. Don't let them fix it if it aint broke! Unless you want to be broke too. It's a shame places like this act this unprofessional.

Took my truck there after hitting a deer and they replied it. When I went to pick it up 7 days after leaving it I noticed the paint wasn't even close to the same color and it liiked textured like a orange. I was told because the bumper was plastic the color would look different. I asked why it didn't look different before the accident 😕 I spoke to the manager and they said they would fix it. A few days later it was fix (it still looked off but it was much closer so I took the truck) this all happened October 2021. The other day I was washing my truck and noticed the bumper looked funny upon closer inspection I noticed the clear coat is separating from the bumper. I called them and they said they would fix it however I am worried about this continuing to be a issue. Personally I am not thrilled about this and I will never bring them another vehicle to repair.

I went into Mac’s Auto Service today to get my car inspected. A few hours later I received a phone call from them saying my car won’t pass inspection as my transmission fluid was leaking and I needed my left and right front control arm worked on and then my car to get re aligned. I was told this would cost around $1,000. I wanted to get a second opinion, so I drove my car to a dealership where they performed the inspection. My car passed the inspection and the dealership said if those were really the true issues, then I wouldn’t be able to drive my car. I’m very disappointed as I’ve been to Mac’s Auto Service in the past and have loved their service. However, this most recent experience has caused me to lose my trust in them.

We had some work done on my wife's SUV after a minor fender-bender. Jeff S. (one of the managers) was fantastic to work with.... he coordinated with the insurance company, communicated clearly and honestly every step of the way, met deadlines and was friendly and flexible. After the initial work was complete, there was another issue with the electrical connection to one of the doors.... no problem though, Jeff went over and above and completed figuring out what the cause of that was and fixed it at no charge and no hassle. Mac's II would be my first call if I ever needed any repair or body work done in the future - no hesitation whatsoever!!

I went to this shop just to ask about parts pricing — no accident, no repairs done. Yet they somehow reported it as an accident, which ended up on my vehicle history report. Because of this false information, my insurance went up by $500, and I lost $3,000 when selling my car due to the fake “accident” record. To make things worse, the parts list they gave me was a complete mess — parts that didn’t match my car, unnecessary items I never asked for, and multiple quantities of things I clearly didn’t need. Absolutely unprofessional and careless. Their mistakes and dishonesty caused me serious financial loss. Avoid this place at all costs!

Getting in a car accident is an unwanted hassle for anyone. After my accident I called a few auto body shops and was told I'd have to wait weeks to just get an appraisal. That's when I talked to Bruce at Mac's Auto Service. Not only did he get me in for an estimate the next day, he also scheduled the repair much more quickly than any of his competitors were able to. He helped set me up with a rental car and kept me informed every step of the way regarding my car's repairs. It could not have been a more seamless process. 10/10 would recommend this place.
